It can depend on a lot of things... particularly on the manufacturer. Black Cans are all fairly consistent and can all be geared similarly, but with a dozen or so manufacturers in the Brushless market, you really need to check with the manufacturer.

Novak suggests a pinion size 2-3 teeth LARGER than what you would use for a stock 27t motor, but advises to go by temperature first... 160-175 degrees MAX at the end of your run (Brushless motor temperature will spike a few moments after a run - you don't want this spike temp to exceed 175 degrees)

LRP recommends an FDR of 3.5 - 5.0 depending on the track length.

The DRCRC Track seems to favor the lower range but every motor is different.

We're finding that most cars don't allow enough room to get quite that low, or finding the right pinion can be tricky.

Best advice is to check the manufacturers website for the recommended gearing and start there. Keep a temp gun handy until you find you can keep the motor cool enough in a 5 minute heat.

If you find a gearing that works well for a brand other than LRP or Novak, this would be a great place to post the info!

There's a lot of ongoing debate about making GT2 a spec class, or introducing a new class like SCAR that would be spec.

On one hand, GT2 is one of our most popular and competitive classes, and specing a motor/esc combo would make it more about driver skill then about pricey equipment... however, most of our drivers have GT2 equipment and as we fine tune the 21.5 issues, it appears that the cars are pretty closely matched as it is with people using the gear they have now.

On the other hand, introducing the SCAR class that is very popular in London, and making it a spec class would potentially revive some interest in On-Road 1/10 Scale racing, and still provide the close knit competitiveness of a spec class.

The second option still leaves GT2 as a great beginner class for new On-Road drivers to familiarize themselves with the hobby.

We will likely open the discussion to member at an upcoming driver's meeting, or a thread here on DRCRC.... for now, if anyone has comments, please feel free to chime in!

Cheers.
Mike.

Hey Chris

Are you confusing Hobby King for Hobbywing?
